UK Visa Sponsorship

I Paid £17,950 for Sponsorship — Here's What Nobody Told Me

I still remember the day I sent that money.

I was sitting in my room. Phone in my hand. My heart was beating fast, but I still went ahead and made the payment. £17,950. Just like that.

I'm not writing this because I want anyone to feel sorry for me. I'm writing it because I genuinely don't want someone else making the same mistake just because they're scared.

How the Money Started to Sound Normal

The first time somebody told me £17,950, I honestly couldn't believe it. I said, "Seriously? For what exactly?"

Then someone else told me that was actually cheap, that some people were paying twenty-five thousand. Then I heard something similar from another person. And slowly, that amount started sounding normal. Like this was just what you had to pay if you wanted to stay in the UK.

That's how they get you. Nobody really stops to ask, "Why are we even paying this much in the first place?" Everyone just keeps talking about the amounts until you start accepting it as normal.

A friend of a friend introduced me to the agent. You know how these things happen. "He's genuine, don't worry. I know someone who used him." So I felt a bit more comfortable. It wasn't just some random person I'd found on Facebook. The introduction had come through someone I knew.

The man started explaining everything. Companies need money for the "risk and paperwork." This is how care sponsorship works. Everyone who wants sponsorship is paying. And if I didn't pay, I felt like I was only making things more difficult for myself.

And honestly, I was exhausted. I was scared of having to go back to India and explain to everyone why things hadn't worked out. So I paid, little by little. My family back in India helped me. I also used the money I'd saved from part-time jobs while I was studying.

I didn't even argue much. I just wanted to stay in the UK.

What That £17,950 Actually Got Me

Let me tell you what I got for that money.

A care job. A CoS. A way to stay in the UK.

That was it.

At that time, I kept telling myself I was paying for peace of mind. For some security. But looking back, I was paying because I was scared, and the man knew that. He knew I'd somehow find the money.

I'm not saying every agent is bad. And it's not only agents either, which is what annoyed me even more when I found out. Some companies themselves ask people for money under the table before they'll issue a CoS. They won't even call it an agent fee. They'll just say, "Pay this amount and we'll arrange everything."

Some of them even look completely genuine. Proper website. Staff. An office. And they're still asking people for money quietly.

The Thing Nobody Tells You

This is something I wish I'd understood much earlier.

You don't have to pay that kind of money for sponsorship. A genuine employer can sponsor you because they want to hire you for the job and because they already have a sponsor licence. The sponsorship costs they're responsible for paying shouldn't be pushed onto someone who's already desperate to find a job.

And trust me, they'll use different names for it. "Processing fee." "Introduction fee." "Just between us." Please don't get confused by all these different names. If somebody is asking you for thousands of pounds before they'll sponsor you, think very carefully.

These conversations don't happen in front of the Home Office. They happen on WhatsApp. Over phone calls. Sometimes cash payments. "Please don't mention this to anyone." And that's why it keeps happening. Nobody talks about it openly, so the next person ends up thinking it's completely normal.

When Everything Fell Apart

About two years later, that same company lost its sponsor licence.

All that £17,950 I'd paid didn't protect me from anything. Suddenly, I was back to square one, looking for another sponsor, and this time I had already decided I wasn't paying that kind of money again. I didn't even have it.

So I stopped looking for somebody who could "sort out" sponsorship for me. Instead, I started looking for companies that could actually sponsor me without asking me to pay them for the job.

That's how I came across VisaJobFinder.com. It was shared in a WhatsApp group I was already in, one of those UK desi groups. Job alerts, visa questions, Home Office updates, everything being discussed in the same group. Someone shared the link one evening. I almost scrolled past it like every other message. I'm really glad I didn't.

A screenshot from one of my WhatsApp groups. This is the chat that changed everything for me.

It wasn't making huge promises. It didn't guarantee me a job. It just showed jobs from companies that already had active sponsor licences and were actually hiring people who needed sponsorship. Not those random adverts saying "sponsorship available," only for the company to start giving excuses the moment you ask about it.

I applied. I attended interviews. And in under 6 weeks, I had a new sponsored job. Nobody asked me to pay for the CoS. The job itself was free. The thing I'd paid £17,950 for the first time, I managed to get the second time without paying anyone to arrange sponsorship for me.

Don't Pay for It. This Is What I Did Instead

I'm not saying all this based on something I heard from someone else. I actually paid that money. Then the company lost its licence, and all that money couldn't do anything to protect my situation. The second time, I found another sponsor in under 6 weeks, and I didn't have to pay for the job.

That's my advice. If someone is asking you to pay thousands of pounds before they'll sponsor you, please understand that you don't have to do that. A genuine employer can sponsor you because they need you for the job and because they already have the licence. You shouldn't have to buy a CoS.

Look for companies that can actually sponsor and are genuinely hiring people who need sponsorship. That's exactly what I used VisaJobFinder.com for. It was a total life changer for me.

I can't promise you'll find a job in 6 weeks. Everyone's situation is different. I can only share what happened to me when I stopped looking for someone to arrange sponsorship in exchange for thousands of pounds.
